In history it is believed that there was a fight for supremacy between Brahma and Vishnu. The fight was so intense that he had to intervene and to sort out an idea came to him. Lord Shiva turned into a beam of light and said who so ever fill find the end of beam of light will be supreme god. Brahma and Vishnu both agreed. Lied Brahma turned into a swan and went towards heaven and Lord Vishnu became a wild boar and ascended to earth. Many years passed but could not find the end of beam of light. Lord Vishnu agreed to his defeat and surrendered himself in from of Lord Shiva.

Lord Brahma lied that he had found the end. When Lord Shiva heard about this lies he did not like the arrogance of Lord Brahma and got very angry. This anger energised the third eye of Shiva from and a fierce manifestation was formed called “Kaal Bhairav”. Brahma was shocked to see Kaal Bhairav. Kal Bhairav cut the fifth head of Brahma with the nails of his left hand. Kaal Bhirva had made the sin of Brahmahatiya hence was cursed to wander with fifth head of Brahma. His body became ugly and black. After years of wandering in three worlds Lord Shiva told him to go to Kashi where his curse was nullifies. As Kaal Bhairav dipped in Ganga his curse was gone nullified hence this place is named called ‘Kapal Mochan'(where one got rid of the skull!) and is very sacred among devotees for Lord Shiva.

Famously called Kotwal, it means “guardian of Kot or fort”, which in ancient India means the highest commanding officer of the fort. The origin of Baba Kaal Bhairav is spoken about in Shiva Purana that a dispute had risen between the three gods Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh for supremacy. And hence in series of event Kaal Bhairav was the ferocious manifestation as a result of third eye activation of Lord Shiva.

Kaal Bhairav was sent to Kashi by Lord Shiva to nullify his curse of killing Brahma and the city started being called Kotwal. Kaal Bhairav is also called as Kshetrapal and Dand Pani, which means the one who punishes people committing sins. And his weapons are Danda and Trishul.
